Code Duplication

🧠 You see duplication hotspots, but what now? Discover how to take action with insights from the dashboard. 👉🏼 Read Blog

This article introduces the Code Duplication dashboard in Quality Clouds, a dedicated view designed to help users detect and manage instances of code duplication more effectively across their ServiceNow or Salesforce environments.

This view represents a strategic addition to our analysis capabilities, aimed at providing users with deeper visibility into one of the most common and costly forms of technical debt.

Code duplication can lead to higher maintenance costs, inconsistent behavior, and lower code readability. However, identifying and resolving these issues manually is time-consuming and error-prone. The Code Duplication view simplifies this process by offering a centralized, structured, and actionable interface that highlights patterns of duplication and guides users through remediation.

Benefits #

This dashboard allows users to:

  • Identify duplicated code blocks across the platform, filtering by active elements or all elements, in a visually structured and easy-to-navigate format.
  • Understand the scope and impact of duplicated code, including the number of lines, occurrences, and related issues.
  • Drill down into details with expandable views that reveal where duplications occur, who created or modified them, and when.
  • Access the information instantly via pop-up views, enabling quicker decision-making without navigating away from the main dashboard.

By surfacing the most impactful duplication areas first, the dashboard empowers teams to take targeted action, prioritize effectively, and ultimately improve the quality and maintainability of their codebase.

How to Get the Most Out of It #

To maximize the value of the Code Duplication view:

  • Start with the main table, which organizes duplicated code into identifiable blocks. Each block gives you a high-level view of the duplication’s spread and severity.
  • Expand blocks of interest to examine the specific elements and line ranges where duplication appears. This enables precise targeting of refactoring efforts.
  • Use the issue pop-up view to understand the quality concerns linked to each block. You can assess severity, track ownership, and monitor update history. All in one place.
  • Adopt a recurring review process, using this view to periodically scan for new duplications as your development continues. It works best as a proactive tool rather than a reactive one.
