Managing Rulesets

This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to review, customize, and manage rulesets in the Quality Clouds Admin Portal. Rulesets determine which quality rules are applied during a scan, giving platform admins the flexibility to tailor quality checks to their organization’s specific needs.

From reviewing default best practices to customizing rule severity or time to fix, this document explains how to use the Admin portal to manage the rules that shape your platform’s quality profile.

What Are Rulesets? #

Rulesets are collections of quality rules applied during scans of your ServiceNow, Salesforce, or SharePoint environments. Each ruleset controls:

  • Which rules are enforced

  • Which rules are ignored or customized

  • How metrics like Quality of Cloud, technical debt, and issue count are calculated

Rulesets can be managed from the Rulesets section in the Admin Portal, and this functionality is only available to Quality Clouds admin users.

Reviewing Rulesets #

If you’re just getting started with Quality Clouds, we recommend reviewing the baseline ruleset applied to your first scan. This gives you an overview of the rules used to calculate your platform’s initial quality metrics.

To review a ruleset:

  • Log in to the Quality Clouds Admin Portal.
  • Navigate to the Rulesets section.
  • Select the relevant instance. Your current ruleset will be displayed.
  • Use filters to narrow down your view by severity, impact area, time to fix, and more.

You can also explore the rules grouped by SaaS configuration elements (CE types) or by impact areas to gain better insight into their coverage and purpose.

Customizing Rulesets #

As an admin, you can modify your ruleset by ignoring, rewriting, or restoring rules.

Any changes made will influence your top-level KPIs and be reflected in future scans, summary reports, and dashboards.

You can always compare custom metrics to the default (baseline) ones, helping you understand the impact of your customizations over time.

Ignoring Rules #

Ignoring a rule means it will no longer be applied during scans.

To ignore a rule:

  • Log in to the Quality Clouds platform.
  • Go to the Rulesets section.
  • Select your instance.
  • Find the rule (issue) you want to ignore.
  • Click on the ‘Ignore rule’ icon.

The selected rule will now be excluded from future scans.

Enabling an Ignored Rule Again #

To re-enable a rule that was previously ignored:

  • Navigate to the Rulesets section.
  • Locate the ignored rule using filters.
  • Click the ‘Restore to default’ icon to re-include it in your scan.

Rewriting Rules #

You can customize a rule by changing its severity or time to fix. These changes affect how your technical debt and issue prioritization are calculated.

To customize a rule:

  • Log in to the Quality Clouds platform.
  • Go to Rulesets.
  • Select your instance.
  • Find the rule you wish to update.
  • Click on the ‘Edit rule’ icon.
  • Adjust the severity and/or time to fix.
  • Click Save.

Your customized rule will take effect in the next scan and be marked as rewritten.

Restoring Rewritten Rules #

To revert a customized rule to its original settings:

  • Open the Rulesets section in the Admin Portal.
  • Select your instance.
  • Filter for rewritten rules.
  • Find the rule you want to reset.
  • Click the ‘Restore to default’ icon.

The rule will now revert to its original definition and behavior.

Batch Updates to Rules #

The Admin Portal supports bulk operations so you can manage rules more efficiently. Use filters to find a group of rules by CE type, severity, or impact area, and then:

  • Ignore multiple rules at once

  • Rewrite multiple rules (same severity or time to fix)

  • Restore multiple rules to default settings

These batch actions help streamline quality governance across complex environments.

Copying Rulesets Across Instances #

If you’ve configured a custom ruleset for one instance, you can reuse it across others by copying it.

To copy a ruleset:

  • Go to the Rulesets section in the Admin Portal.
  • Select the source instance (with the ruleset you want to reuse).
  • Click the ‘Copy ruleset’ icon.
  • Choose the target instance(s) you want to apply it to.
  • Confirm the copy.

The new ruleset will be active in the next scan.

❗Note: Custom threshold values (if defined separately) are not copied along with the ruleset.

Summary #

Managing rulesets gives admin users full control over the rules applied to platform scans, allowing for accurate, relevant, and actionable quality reporting. Whether you’re aligning with internal policies or focusing on specific technical goals, customizing your ruleset ensures the insights you get from Quality Clouds reflect what matters most to your organization.
