Where to manage billing #
Open Organisation Settings from the sidebar workspace selector. You’ll see two relevant sections:
- Plan & tier at the top — your current tier chip, a short status (e.g. “No paid subscription”, “Pro — renews May 12”), an Upgrade to Pro button, and three usage bars (Workspaces, Repositories, Scans / week).
- Billing further down — a Plan card, a Payment method card, an invoices area, and a Manage in Stripe → link.
What each tier costs #
Pricing is on the Norma pricing page. The numbers here describe what you get; the page above tells you what it costs.
| Tier | Cost | Quota highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Free forever | 1 workspace · 1 repositories · 5 scans / week |
| Pro | Paid monthly | 3 workspaces · 10 repo and 100 scan / month |
See Tiers and quotas for the full table.
Upgrading to Pro #
You can upgrade from either:
- The Upgrade button in the top bar of the app, or
- Organisation Settings → Plan & tier → Upgrade to Pro.
Both routes open a Stripe Checkout in a new tab. Enter your payment details, confirm the subscription, and you’ll be redirected back to Norma. The upgrade is applied immediately — your workspace quota jumps to 3 and a toast confirms “Upgrade successful! Your plan has been upgraded. New quotas are now active.”
If something goes wrong during checkout (you cancel, the card is declined), Norma stays on Free and shows a toast: “Checkout cancelled — your plan was not changed.”
Managing your subscription #
Once you’re on Pro, the Billing section in Organisation Settings shows:
- Plan card — your tier, billing cadence, and the monthly amount.
- Payment method card — the card on file (last 4 digits), or “No payment method on file” with an Add a card link.
- Invoices — past invoices appear here after your first payment, with download links.
- Manage in Stripe → — opens the Stripe Customer Portal in a new tab, where you can update card details, download invoices, change billing email, and cancel the subscription.
All payment data lives in Stripe — Norma never sees your card number.
Cancelling your Pro subscription #
You can cancel your Pro subscription from inside Norma — there’s no need to hunt through the Stripe portal to find the cancel option.
How to cancel #
- Open Organisation Settings → Plan & tier.
- Click Cancel subscription next to the Manage subscription button.
- Read the confirmation dialog. Nothing changes yet.
- Click Continue to Stripe. You’ll be redirected to Stripe’s cancellation screen, which shows your plan and the date access ends.
- Confirm on Stripe. You’ll be sent back to Norma.
You must be the organisation admin to see the Cancel subscription button. Regular members don’t see billing management controls.
What happens after you cancel #
Your Pro features remain active until the end of the current billing period. Nothing is downgraded on the spot. Back in Norma, three things change to reflect the scheduled cancellation:
- An amber banner appears at the top of Organisation Settings: “Your Pro plan ends on {date}. You’ll keep full access until then.”
- The Plan & tier row shows the cancellation state — “Cancellation scheduled — ends {date}” in amber, in place of the usual “Active subscription” status.
- The Cancel subscription button is replaced by a Reactivate action (see below), so you always have a one-click undo until the date passes.
You keep every Pro feature — full quotas, all rulesets, member access — until the effective date. The banner is there to remind you the plan is ending, not to lock anything.
Changing your mind — Reactivate #
Before the effective date arrives, you can reverse the cancellation at any time.
- Click Reactivate plan in the amber banner, or Reactivate in the Plan & tier row.
- You’ll be redirected to Stripe, where your cancelled plan is shown with a reactivate option. Click it.
- On return, Norma refreshes and the banner disappears — your subscription resumes as if nothing had been scheduled.
You can also reactivate from Manage subscription — same destination, one extra click.
What happens when the effective date arrives #
At the end of the billing period, three things happen automatically:
- Your tier reverts to Free.
- Your workspace count is preserved — none of your existing workspaces are deleted. If you had three, you keep three.
- You enter an over-quota state until you delete workspaces back down to one. You can’t create new workspaces until you’re within the Free limit, but everything you already have keeps working.
Repository quotas and scan quotas behave similarly — existing data is never deleted, but new actions are gated by the Free limits.
Pro-only rulesets (currently the Architecture / SOLID Analyzer) also lock at the effective date: their historical findings remain viewable, but future scans on Free skip them. See Pro-only rulesets — Downgrading.
The old way still works #
If you prefer, you can still cancel from Manage subscription → Stripe portal → Active plan → Cancel — it lands at the same place. The Cancel subscription button just skips those extra clicks.
Refunds and proration #
Stripe handles proration automatically. If you upgrade mid-month, the next invoice is prorated. If you cancel mid-month, you keep Pro until the period ends — there are no automatic refunds for unused time. For specific refund requests, contact support.
Tax and VAT #
Stripe collects VAT and sales tax where required, based on the billing address you provide at checkout. Tax appears as a line item on every invoice.
Frequently asked questions #
Can I pay annually instead of monthly?
Not via self-service in the July 2026 release. If you want annual billing, contact sales.
My payment failed — what happens?
Stripe retries the card automatically several times over the following week. If all retries fail, Stripe sends you an email and your subscription is moved to a paused state — you keep Pro for the rest of the current period, then revert to Free as if you’d cancelled. Adding a working card from Manage in Stripe restores everything.
Can I add my company billing email or VAT number?
Yes, in the Stripe Customer Portal — Manage in Stripe → Billing information.
Where can I download past invoices?
Organisation Settings → Billing → Manage in Stripe → Invoices. Each invoice is a PDF download.
Does Norma charge per member, per repository, or per scan?
No — Pro is a flat per-organisation subscription that raises your quotas. Members, repositories, and scans within those quotas are included.
Will I get a refund for the unused part of the month if I cancel?
No — cancelling keeps you on Pro until the end of the current billing period, and there are no automatic refunds for the unused portion. Reactivating before the effective date costs nothing.
Can a regular Owner cancel the subscription?
No — only the organisation admin sees the Cancel subscription and Reactivate controls. Other Owners see the plan and quotas but not the billing actions.
I already cancelled once and reactivated. Can I cancel again?
Yes — cancellation and reactivation can happen any number of times before the effective date. Each cancel schedules a fresh effective date based on the current billing period.
